Girls' soccer: Dodge, Lady Warhawks fight hard in region loss

Great Crossing was a decided underdog going into Monday’s 11th Region girls’ soccer quarterfinal at Henry Clay, which entered the tournament after winning its sixth consecutive 42nd District title. But, lo and behold, the 41st District runner-up Lady Warhawks jumped out to the lead when Madisyn Dodge, above, scored midway through the first half. Henry Clay’s playoff experience and depth ultimately prevailed, and the Lady Blue Devils raced away with a 4-1 victory. It capped a terrific inaugural season for GC (5-13), which defeated Western Hills on penalty kicks in both the regular season and a district rematch to earn a regional playoff invitation in year one. “Henry Clay’s set plays were spot on,” GC coach Steve Brown said of the barrage by the hosts, who matched their second-highest scoring total of the season. Playing goalkeeper in a relief role, junior Hannah Washburn “played great,” Brown said, including one save on a penalty kick. Great Crossing will graduate only one senior, defensive anchor Kyrstin Tillman.
